Invasive Species Information
Helpful information about how to combat invasive species in our local area.
African Olive
African olive is a hardy small tree first brought to Australia in the 1800s for hedges and as rootstock for edible olives. Birds spread the fruit into bushland, where its dense shade crowds out the native plants underneath.
Camphor Laurel
Camphor laurel was planted for shade and as a garden tree, and birds have since spread it across the farmland and creek banks of the North Coast. Large trees take over paddocks and riverbanks and stop native forest from coming back.
Bitou Bush
Bitou bush is a South African shrub that was planted on NSW beaches after sand mining and now covers large areas of coastal dune. Within 10 km of the coast the aim is to stop it spreading. Further inland it must be reported and removed.
Lantana
Lantana is one of the most widespread weeds on the Mid North Coast. It forms dense, prickly thickets along creeks, roadsides and bush edges, crowds out native plants and is poisonous to livestock.
