Glossy-Black Cockatoo Feed Trees

Nambucca Valley Landcare received a grant from Taronga Zoo to help us provide feed trees for the endangered glossy-black cockatoos. These birds feed only on the seeds of she-oaks, Forest Oak (Allocasuarina torulosa) and Black She-oak (Allocasuarina littoralis). Many glossy-black cockatoos are faithful to certain feed trees, and as a result of the 2019 bushfires, much of their suitable feeding habitat was burnt (DCCEEW 2022). Since the fires, the Glossy-black Cockatoos have found some refuge in the coastal zone, however this does not fully fill the habitat niche they require so we are helping to provide more food trees for the future.

This grant has allowed us to provide 1,234 feed trees for planting across the Nambucca Valley. They stretch from Valla to Eungai, Utungun to Girralong and many places in-between.

Feed trees all planted!
